Commodore's Remarks

Spring is nearly here which means the start of the 2007 sailing season and many of us are busy refitting our craft (in the cold and wet as usual).

Exciting things have been happening at the Club in the past few months. The bid for Olympic funding is processing well (with many thanks to Robert Logan, Doug Smith, Harold Boyle and others for their hard work over the past seven or eight months.)
The new restaurant is being used on a regular basis, and why not. It provides some of the best food in Carrickfergus, and at a modest price.
Our membership increased by almost 20% in 2006 and hopefully it will be repeated again this year, especially if current members promote CSC to their friends.

At this point I want to remind everyone that the Irish Boat Jumble is drawing ever closer and I would like to appeal to members to bring all their unused 'stuff' to be sold from the Club stall. Last year the stall made several hundred pounds for Club funds and these are needed for the coming year. Please bring your items down during the week running up to the event and let us know your target price. At this point all you have to do is wait for the cash to start rolling in (with a commission to the Club). I will be down all day on the Saturday before the jumble to accept items.

Olympic Bid

For those members who were unable to attend the information meeting about the Olympic bid, we list below some of the major topics that were covered.

Great Balloon Race

A balloon race has been organised to raise much needed funds for the Junior Sailing section of the Club. You can purchase balloons at £2 each at the club bar, or you may take a sheet and sell some to your friends and family. The balloons will be released during the Irish Boat Jumble on 15th April. For any further information, contact Alan Grundie.

Racing

Racing commences with the Spring Series on Sunday 25th March. Notice of race and entry forms can be found on the website.

This year Carrickfergus Sailing Club will play host to a J24 event on 21st-22nd April and a Topper Traveller event on 16th June.

Junior Sailing will be commencing in the near future. More information will come soon.

Safety Boat Crew Needed

Go Karting

The deputy director of Carrickfergus Sailing Club Extreme Sports Section has announced that there will be Go-karting on the 31st March. The racing will be in Raceview Karting, Ballymena at 13:30. It will be £36 per driver with a deposit of £10 required. Entry forms are available from the bar or form Alan Grundie.

CSC GOES GREEN (& BLUE)

The sea is our playground and the waters of Belfast Lough are clean enough for us to sail (and occasionally swim) in. But the cleanliness of this water depends on a fine balance between the creatures and plants that inhabit it and us land creatures. Nature is very good at cleansing itself providing we don't interfere too much.
We are surrounded by tall buildings and hard surfaces, including our own par park and boat park. When it rains (and when doesn't it!) the pollutants in the air and from the road wash straight into the sea.
Trees, shrubs and plants absorb CO2 from the air, their roots filter out a certain amount of pollutants and toxins in the ground, they attract birds and insects who in their turn improve the quality of our environment. This small project is an important contribution to the general improvement of the area as well as making our club premises more aesthetically pleasing.

As well as the tree planting on St Patrick's Day, we are also planning to plant shrubs and wild flowers on the grass bank on the seaward side of the Club at Easter and bulbs later on in August. Dates for these events still have to be confirmed.

More information about these can be found on www.thegreenblue.org.uk
