Relaunch of the Sublime!

In case you hadn't noticed the Club’s motor launch, Sublime, has been out of the water now for almost three years. Some of this lengthy time on land has been due to lack of parts and some of it due to a lack of spare time, (on the part of the engineer that is)! Recently Stephen Molloy has taken the old girl under his wing and, with a lot of hard work and determination, Sublime has now been launched resplendent in her new livery, all thanks to Stephen. A thanks also to Catchy Signs  for the new Signage, to John McClure who helped with the joinery work and Alec Kirkpatrick who helped paint the awkward bits that Stephen couldn't reach! Stephens next project is getting the Sailability Squibs ready for another Seasons Sailing

Stephen taking a well earned rest!

Racing Update

The weather has picked up over the last week and at the time of writing we will have another week of high pressure. This is the time that final preparations are being made for the first of the year’s racing, the Spring Series that starts on the last Sunday of March (30th). Hopefully, you too will be ready to take part. This series is an open event of five races over six weeks.

A break over the Easter Weekend has been inserted in the club racing to allow the Northern Mirror Championships to take place at Carrickfergus and many members will be giving up their weekend to run both shoreside and ‘on the water’ activities. If you’re free, you’ll be welcome to assist in any way possible.

Following straight after the Spring Series will be the Tuesday and Thursday ‘club members only’ racing starting on 6th and 8th May respectively. A slight change from previous years is the stipulation that entry forms must be completed, as this will ensure that the safety and insurance aspects are covered and also make it easier for the race team to know which boats have genuinely entered for the series.

Sunday the 18th May sees the return of the Bi-Annual Ruffian 23 North/South Team Racing although the whole weekend may be required for pre/après sailing ‘team preparations’!

A new venue this year is the W. & G. Baird Glenarm Weekend with a race to Glenarm on Saturday 7th June and an overnight stay with return on Sunday (or whenever). There will be a voluntary component in support of the R.N.L.I. This will not be an easy sail as tides are not favourable and local knowledge of back eddies etc. may help the winner!

To see the full racing programme for the year which includes other outside events, view Steve Atkinson’s extensive website on www.carrickfergussc.org.

Happy ( but serious) sailing,    Jim Massey

Looking for a Volunteer!

The Club Sailing Secretary has traditionally taken on the role of securing Sponsorship for Club Events. With the increased workload for this year’s Sailing Secretary, Jim Massey, it’s felt that there would be merit in "spreading the load" so to speak!

Sponsorship and Fundraising is an important area of responsibility for the Club and we therefore feel it now warrants its own post within the organisation. So if you feel you could spare an hour or so each week and fill the role of a Fundraising/Sponsorship Officer please speak to any Member of your Committee

SMOKING POLICY

No Smoking Day has just passed and I for one was horrified at some of the statistics in various newspaper articles, particularly on the dangers from passive smoking.  I would be the last to suggest a non smoking club but I feel that steps could be taken which would make the Club more comfortable for everyone.  It is evident that some non smoking members are put off attending social functions because of the level of smoke fumes.  One possible solutions would be to have a policy regarding the use of the extraction units.  It may be that they are not turned on soon enough.  Perhaps also the actual bar area i.e. along the front where the bar stools are should be designated as a no smoking zone.

What are your views?

If you wish to comment contact me Robert Logan, email above or telephone 9335 3332 I’ll pass your comments on.
