FROM THE COMMODORE

It seems like no time at all since our AGM in January and in that time there has been much to do. Your committee have been aware that 'JIBSHEET' has not been published for some considerable time and recognise the need for regular issue. We hope that you find the contents of this issue informative and we hope to get the regular issue back on track with much more information about what your club is doing.

In the short period from January to date, the club committee have been busy attending to items of overdue maintenance. I'm sure that you have noticed the new club sign at the 'front' of the building and the recently refurbished upstairs toilets and re-painted changing rooms. Our thanks go to Davy McNeilly and his team who have delt with these items and the other ongoing issues which have needed to be addressed to keep our club comfortable and presentable.

Facilities cannot be maintained nor improved unless our club has a revenue income and Geoff Alcorn and Sam and Shirley Penny have been working rigorously to ensure that our membership and boat park records are both managed accurately. With these resources we can look forward to developing our facilities, and our committee is now turning attention to improvement projects such as members access control and power distribution to the boat park to name but a few.
Major repair activities to the bund wall at the slipway will begin on the 15th November with heavy machinery and materials traversing the boat park. During these repairs access restrictions to the boat park will be in place and the committee would ask for your co-operation in ensuring safe and speedy contractors access during these works.

The club continues to be extremely active and successful on the water. Colin, Richard, and Kate de Fleury have an ever increasing customer base for the excellent services of the registered teaching establishment, and I am delighted that the clubs association with the local schools has been maintained through midweek training sessions with Ulidia Integrated College. The regular fleets which sail from the club, whether cruising or racing, have once again this year explored far and wide. From one end of the British Isles to the other Carrickfergus SC members have been in attendance at nearly every major event including the Whisky Run, West Highland Week, The Scottish Series, Oyster Pearl Trophy, Ford Cork Week, and of course Cowes Week where Rory Moore took second place in the sportsboat fleet sailing Pure 6, designed and built by himself and Richard McClure. Our junior Topper sailors attended their class world championships in Carnac France and performed outstandingly in some very difficult conditions. Well done all involved. Lastly but not least 2004 saw the departure of Blath na Mara and Armanella on their long haul voyage to wherever the wind takes them. They are now on the trail of other members who have gone before them like Bob & Christine Harper and Willie & Sheila Beatty . Good luck and fair winds to Ray, Maggie, Jim, Willie and Sheila ,we'll all be keeping an eye out for tales of adventure.

Finally I would like to thank Terry Windsor and the team in the club battery and all those who have helped in rescue duties throughout the year to ensure that our regular domestic sailing continues to provide a backbone to our club activities. The annual celebration of our summer sailing activities, the Dinner Dance & Prize Giving, takes place on Saturday 13th of November at the Quality Hotel Carrickfergus. Details of this event are enclosed. Hope to see you all there.

SMOKING BAN

74% of the UK population do not smoke

This figure is likely to be representative of the non smokers in our Club's membership

How many of those non smoking members avoid social functions in the Club House as a result of smoke in the atmosphere?

Let me have your views!

In July and August I was sailing around most of Ireland and found the lack of smoke in restaurants and bars in the Republic most pleasant.

The law was changed there on a Health and Safety issue as bar staff are entitled to a safe working environment with clean air

The British Medical Council is calling for a similar ban in the UK.

Our Bar Staff have been instructed to turn the air extraction and filter equipment on before the Clubroom becomes smoky i.e. before the first cigarette is lit.
