Marine VHF Radio (Short Range Certificate) Course

Courses are scheduled for the following dates:

  • Sat 22nd March
  • Say 26th April

A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board, and it is vital to understand the correct procedures for its use.

The Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and hand held equipment using International channels. It is often required to complete the requirements for other RYA practical sailing qualifications.

Course topics include:

  • the basics of radio operation
  • the correct frequencies (channels) to be used
  • distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures
  • making ship to shore telephone calls
  • Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators
  • Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
  • Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB)
  • Search and Rescue (SART)

Class size is a minimum of 4 or maximum of 6. The course fee for Members is £65 and for Non-Members £80 paid to the RTC before acceptance for the course. Additional courses can be arranged through the Sailing Secretary.

There has been interest expressed by those progressing through sailing courses who need a VHF Certificate to complete requirements, but who are often committed at weekend courses or instruction. If this is your need mid-week courses could be made available.

The course requires 10 hours instruction consisting of a 3-hour pre course home learning period followed by a 7-hour instructional period. The course will conclude with a short written and practical assessment by an external Assessor for which a fee of £76 (https://www.rya.org.uk/training/theory/src-exams) is payable directly to the Royal Yachting Association at the time of the test. This fee is in addition to the course feefor Club Members paid to the RTC. Spaces may be available for persons who are not Members of CSC dependent upon Member demand.

Please also contact the Sailing Secretary sailing@carrickfergussc.org if you want to arrange a course which is delivered mid-week.
